Character Counts!

Do any characters in your book grow or change over the course of the novel? If so, how?
Does any character come to learn something about himself/herself or view the world differently? If so, what does he/she learn?
Or is the character “static,” unchanging from beginning to end? Explain.

  1. Hunger Games By: Suzanne Collins

Yes, Katniss Everdeen learns that she is able to defeat 22 other tributes from other districts in the Hunger Games and that by rebelling against the rules, she could be killed for it.

  2. Nolan Zavoral- A Season on the Mat
One character in my book, Lincoln McIlravy, was a new student in the group of elite wrestlers on the University of Iowa wrestling team. At the beginning of the season, he is not as good as everyone expects him to be, and he does not give it his all. I wonder if he will stay this way, or further into the season he will give it his all and show people what they were looking for out of him.

I am reading Danger Zone by: David Klass. The character in my book that changes is Jimmy. He got invited to play for the U.S.A and he turned it down, because the family was going through a hard time. Later on his mom found out and asked him why he didn't tell her, and he said that she needed him at home. His mom said the reason that she has been working for was for him. So he learned a lot within a few days.

  4. Tell No One by Harlan Coben

So far in my book the Shauna has changed a lot. She goes from being an immature women to being a responsible wife, friend, and mother. She has learned to contain her anger and not get so upset over little things. Beck is the person that begins to view the world differently. He learns to not take things for granted when someone is coming after him for his wife's murder. He begins to listen more to what people have to say and start doing his own thing.

  5. My book is The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. A character that changes is Katniss, when her little sister was chosen to participate in the hunger games. Instead of just watching like she had every other year, she volunteered to participate in her place. She learns that she cares about her sister more than she realized and that she is braver than she thought.

  6. Sophomore Switch by Abby McDonald. Both Natasha and Emily change in major ways over the course of the book. Natasha goes from being a hardcore party girl to an Oxford exchange student, she learns that she's stronger than she thought and she doesn't need people in her life who can't accept her past. Emily goes from being an uptight control freak to being able to relax and just go with the flow, she learns that you can't plan everything out and how to have fun.

  8. After By Amy Efaw

I think the main character in my book has already changed. Devon was a model student, but then she did a horrible crime. She's more vulnerable now than ever. She's learning about how the world isn't filled with just good and bad people. There are people in between. I don't think Devon will ever be able to go back to the person or life that she had before. All of her future plans are no longer possible.

  9. In my book, the soldiers are all almost required to change their characters to survive. They have to learn how to work with others to achieve a goal. There isn't a single character that stays the same by the end.

The guy Trey, that sells the stash to her friend finds out that Kristina has a baby, but doesn't know the truth of how she came of getting pregnant. The monster is basically destroying Kristina's life. And with out help I doubt she will ever be the same,

  13. I am reading A Stolen Life by Jaycee Dugard. In the beginning of the book, Jaycee was kidnapped. She was only 11 and thought what her kidnapper, Phillip, did was okay and that she should feel sorry for him. Now, over 10 years later, she changes and realizes that what he did was wrong. Phillip always told her that the world was a horrible place and that's why he kept her locked up. She later viewed the world differently and realized it wasn't such a bad place after all.

Thorgil changes the most because she is breaking away from the viking life style and not wanting to kil everything all the time. He ends up learning that he lives in a world with magic and he has to be clever if he wants the life of his dreams. Johnny also learns that he is in love with his childhood friend Meg. Both Johnny and Meg have to grow up to see if it is best for them to stay friends or become more then that.

  23. Crash: By Jerry Spinelli

My Characters name is Crash. Throughout the book Crash really stays the same. When he was little he would wrestle other kids and get into fights. Now he is in 7th grade and still gets sent to the principals office for getting into a fight. Crash is hyper all the time and is always challenging people. He hasn't changed much from when he was little.

  25. Breaking Dawn

Bella changes quite a bit in this book. Even though she is still madly in love with Edward, some of that love shifts over to her new baby. She gets really protective about it and she hasn't previously done that. She is trying out her "new" body, so I would say she figures out a lot about herself. She views the world differently because her sense get better when she is changed into a vampire. In the end, she learns how important her family is to her.

  26. 127 Hours by Aron Ralston

I just started reading this book so the main character, Aron, has not made any drastic changes. There was a part where Aron was recalling a time he was mountain climbing. He got to the top and looked back down and realized how small the human race is compared to nature. I would say at the time that was sort of a change of mind set. I do think Aron will change throughout the book as I continue.

So far in my book Lena the main character has not changed physically but growing up in the 1940's she has become quite familiar with racism and she has to deal with being different and not accepted every day. She has just stolen a book and will have to deal with the circumstances as her father has found it. Lena will have to find out if her family and herself are tough and stubborn enough to stick it out in racial Kansas.

The main character, Ed Thomas seems to change and grow throughout the book because of the EF5 tornado that went through his home town. He adapts to the huge changes after the tornado but also seems to be a stronger man because of what happened and he now looks at what he has and had differently.

The main character, Delia, changes a lot throughout time. She finds out that she was kidnapped when she was young by her father so the life that she knows is a lie. She becomes very confused and distant.
Delia also begins to learn the true value of life and love throughout the story as she figures out the life that she would have had and becomes more thankful.

  34. A Stolen Life by Jaycee Dugard

This whole book is about how Jaycee has changed and grown as a person because of her horrible experiences. She was faced with an awful situation and still somehow manages to make it through and continue to live as normally as possible. I think she learns how brave she is, and how hope can get you through difficult situations. She says she now views the world as a place where even the most dark things can hold hope.

  35. The Son of Tarzan by Edgar Rice Burroughs

The main character, Korak, makes a big change in the beginning of the book. He starts off as Jack, the son of Tarzan who longs for the jungle. He sneaks away to the jungle and never returns home. He becomes known as Korak among the apes. He turns into a savage beast in the jungle. He hunts for his own food and eats it rare, he communicates with various animals, and he engages in battle with an animal like ferocity. Through his change into a beast, Korak retains his ability to love, something a jungle beast is not capable of.

  36. A Dance for Three by Louise Plummer
The main character, Hannah, definitely changes in the novel, because she learns she is pregnant at age fifteen. She views the world differently now because her boyfriend, Milo, hurt her and won't claim the baby and she now has a big responsibility. She learns this by the consequences that come with a child and realizing she has to grow up at such a young age.

  37. Wicked: A Pretty Little Lairs Novel by Sarah Shepard
There are four main characters in Wicked: Spencer, Aria, Emily, and Hanna. Through the course of the book they have each changed in their own way. Some of them have discovered themselves for who they really are, others have learned of family secrets. Overall, all the main characters have changed how they conduct their attitudes and actions due to the consequences of not watching what they do. They learn that it doesn't always pay to get revenge and keep secrets, but to be honest with one another. These characters are most definitely not "static".

  39. Fallout by: Ellen Hopkins

The main characters in the book are Autumn, Summer, and Hunter. They are all children of Kristina Snow, who is their meth-addicted mother, but they all live in different places. She has had hardly anything to do with either of them. They are all angry with her for abandoning them and live difficult lives, as they have to suffer the consequences of her stupid decisions. I think further into the book, they will make peace with themselves and learn to forgive their mother, or at least accept what they can't change.

Sir James at the beginning of the novel, seemed like a board governor of Jamaica. He didn't seem to care much about anything, but his fancy cloths and excesories. As i read on i find that he changes; becoming very interested in treasure, women, and has a taste for privateering. He also seems like a man who lies to the crown for his own needs, like steals gold and taxes.

  47. I am reading the book Divergent by Veronica Roth. Yes, one character in my book, Beatrice, is changing her personality and beliefs. She used to be focused on selflessness, but is now questioning if it was her or just an act she put on. Now, she is more focused on being fearless and conquering her fears. Yes, Beatrice learns that she can focus on many aspects of life and they are interconnecting. Like courage require selflessness and selflessness require courage. Beatrice is not "static" because she is changing her personality to try to find herself.
